后街男孩的团名“Backstreet”原是奥兰多市的一个著名跳蚤市场（Backstreet Market）的名字，“Backstreet”这个词的直译是“后街”。在大陆地区对他们的译名是“后街男孩”。 　　1993年，来自Florida州的初中生HowieD,A.J.,Nick和来自Kentucty州Lexington市的表兄弟Kevin , Brain (高中生)在一间录音室相遇。他们之前均有过表演经验,其中Nick曾演过肥皂剧。大家一见如故,遂 进行了长谈,结果他决定组建一个乐队--Backstreet Boys。他们开始录制单曲,但推出后在美国本土销量不佳。在这段乐队历史上最困难的 时期他们互相安慰,互相鼓励.他们开始往英国发展（因为英国当时是偶像乐队的发源地，许多偶像乐队都产生在那里）。 　　五个才华洋溢的少年，不仅舞跳得好、长相俊美、更重要的是他们个个是充满音乐天分的奇才。1994年初成军时仍只是初生之犊不畏虎的小毛头，一年之后，他们推出了之一盘同名专辑,迅速在英国窜红,勇夺英国各大排行榜首位,他们以令人耳目一新的歌和优美的和声,成为无数少男少女的偶像。他们乘胜追击, 终于在歌坛高手云集的祖国红了起来，成为众所瞩目的新偶像，他们就是——“后街男孩”！ “后街男孩”的五个成员中，Kevin和Brian来自深受音乐及宗教影响的家庭，从小即在教堂圣乐和唱诗班的熏陶下长大，因此练就了一流的灵魂乐合音式唱腔。之后Kevin决定离开家乡出外打拼，先在迪士尼乐园当导游，同时剩余的时间都致力于成为专业的词曲作家。 另外的三名成员，A.J.、Howie、Nick则来自奥兰多。这三个人原本分别活跃 于演艺界，演过音乐剧；拍过电影、电视、广告。有一天，这三个人凑在一起准备替一个新案子试音时，突然发现他们气味相投，于是一拍即合；加上离开家乡出来打天下的Kevin、Brian，五个满怀理想的少年组成一个以优美合音见长的乐团，并以奥兰多最出名的地标为名，“后街男孩”于是诞生！ 首支单曲“We've go it goin' on”是由Ace of Base的 *** 人Denniz Pop操刀 *** ，这首舞曲展现了男孩们活力四射的青春气息，在欧陆方面成绩不俗，在奥地利、瑞士、荷兰、法国等均有打入十名内的嘉绩。接下来的“I'll never break your heart”是首抒情曲，成功地为他们打开了欧洲的知名度。成绩更好的一首单曲则是“Get Down(You are the one for me)”，在国内也由杜德伟翻唱为“发烧”一曲，其惊人的魅力由此可见一斑。 这五个能歌善舞的后街男孩，带着阳光般的笑容，征服全球。首张专辑已获得了四白金，更在舞曲王国的德国、瑞士蝉联冠军. 后街男孩演唱组一直在强调，他们并不是那种“一个人唱歌，而其他几个人跳舞”的组合，而他们最出色的也莫过与他们完美的和声,和节奏感。VH1 Music的记录片可以很好的说明他们的存在：在后街男孩演唱组之一次出现在欧洲媒体面前的时候，大部分媒体都只是觉得这几个男生长的很漂亮，舞跳的很好。而当他们开始在无伴奏乐的情况下清唱了几首歌曲后，所有人都表露出吃惊的表情。虽然后街男孩并不是一个高调的演唱小组，但在脱离后街男孩这个团体后，组合成员凯文多次公开表示对美国执政党及总统布什的不满，并几度重申美对伊拉克战争是“没有进行任何思考的闹剧”。 　　组合成军13年来最有影响的一件事便是团员A.J 因为个人原因于2001年宣布暂时退出组合，导致后街男孩世界巡演进行到一半被迫终止。之后迈克林与一个月后回到组合，参加组合在达拉斯的演唱会。随即组合发行精选辑及首次来亚洲日本进行演出，反响热烈。之后组合开始了长达两年的解体（而他们自己的话则是“修整期”）。 　　在组合解体的那段时间里，团员尼克·卡特开始了个人的生涯，并且他做出了一些伤害组合的事情。他在接受德国杂志PopCorn采访时攻击另一位成员布莱恩，并且在接受传媒大鳄MTV的采访时承认对后街男孩组合的反感。后来，尼克发行了一张专集《Now Or Never》，这张专集在美国售出50万份以上。在之后后街男孩其他四人一纸将尼克及唱片公司告上法庭，索赔近亿美元，因为公司将尼克个人专辑的广告登在了后街男孩的专属网站上。 　　在2003年底，团员A.J 参加了“欧普拉脱口秀”，首次向大家坦白了他做为一个公众艺人及一个有着精神疾病病人的一些不为人知的事情。在那次节目进行到一半时，其他四位成员突然出现在了现场。节目结束后已经整整一年多没有在一起的五个人坐在了更衣室里，他们互相流着泪，并且一致决定继续后街男孩组合。 　　尼克在后来的采访里告诉记者，当时他正在伦敦准备着自己的第二张个人专集的录制工作，而布莱恩则给他打了 *** ，告诉他A.J正在做欧普拉的节目。在短暂的考虑之后，尼克决定和其他三个人一样，给A.J一个惊喜。 　　美国前总统比尔·克林顿曾在后街男孩鼎盛时期接见过这支演唱团体，并且称赞他们为美国唱片业做出的巨大贡献。而后街男孩的诞生则不仅仅是一个奇迹，它更拉开了全球男子团体及一个代 号为 Teen Pop 的词汇。Teen Pop - 这是一个有争议的词汇，一部分人认为Teen Pop的音乐只针对不到21岁的歌迷，是属于一种毫无内容而言的爱情歌曲而已。而演唱者的真正表演水准并不重要。许多说唱歌手或者一些批评者们多次在歌曲 及文章里讽刺了这类音乐的无趣；另一部分人认为Teen Pop是带动美国唱片经济发展的更大原因之一。而后街男孩则是更大的推动者，也是更大的受益人。 　　在许多美国人看来，如果后街男孩演唱组不存在，那么之后的超级男孩组合，“小甜甜”布兰妮·斯皮尔斯，甚至远在欧洲的西城男孩组合等等也不会存在。 　　团员霍伊还曾与韩国歌手宝儿合作歌曲《Show me what you got》。 　　2007年在后街男孩作为一个组合的历程中注定将具有特殊的意义。随着2006年乐团初创成员Kevin Richardson因个人原因决定暂时离队，Backstreet Boys将在2007年之一次以四人组合的形式出现在乐迷面前，Nick Carter，Howie Dorough，Brian Littrell，AJ McLean他们并没有为Kevin寻找一位替代者，而是将永远保留这个位置，虚位以待Kevin的回归。而2007年又恰逢后街男孩在美国本土发行首张专辑的十周年纪念。在这样一个特殊时刻，Backstreet Boys将在今年10月30日推出全新专辑，这将是后街男孩的第六张大碟，同时也是后街男孩之一张在没有Kevin加入的情况下录制的专辑。 　　专辑的之一支单曲“Inconsolable”，由Emanuel Kiriakou (Nick Lachey “What’s Left Of Me”, Katherine McPhee “Ordinary World”)创作并 *** , 参与这首歌曲创作的还包括Lindy Robbins 以及Jess Cates。 　　北京时间2009年7月8日，团员Brian Littrell通过微型博客（Twitter）对外宣部：后街男孩即将于10月6日发行的新专辑,已于7月27日发布首支单曲名为"Straight Through My Heart"，是著名音乐人RedOne的作品。 　　2009年7月30日上午消息，美国青春流行组合后街男孩(Backstreet Boys)于近日通过官方宣布，他们的第9张正式专辑《This Is Us》将于10月6日正式发行。目前新专辑的首支单曲《Straight Through My Heart》已经完成，而组合的成员也期望能够通过新专辑再一次回到流行音乐的之一线。
